How to Throw the Best Backyard BBQ Ever from Our Hickory Grill Rental Company

Nothing says summer quite like throwing a party whose main purpose is to consume vast quantities of beer and meat. Even though backyard barbecues are supposed to be the most low-key kind of party you can throw, though, a lot of work and planning goes into getting that perfect “care-free” vibe. Before you fire up the grill, here’s a how-to guide of planning the perfect summer BBQ.

Appoint a designated grill captain

No one likes to be shoved into the role of grill-master while everyone else is cooling off and having fun. But most people will be happy to accept the appointment. If you’re going to be playing host or hostess, you probably won’t have time to watch the meat yourself—so decide on who will be holding the spatula ahead of time, and make sure you have their enthusiastic permission.

Make sure you have enough cooking fuel

So, you’ve got your meat, and you’ve got your grandad’s prize-winning finger-lickin’ BBQ recipe. Now, don’t forget you forget the fuel! If you’re using a charcoal grill, you’ll need about a full chimney’s worth. If you’re using gas, make sure you’ve got enough propane. Also, while we’re on the subject of fire, make sure that the backup propane stays far away from the action until it’s needed, and that there’s a fire extinguisher handy.

Make sure you have enough ice

Most people remember the beer and the soda, but ice is a bit harder to remember (and just as crucial). The key here is to get a lot more than you think you need. A quick rule of thumb is one pound of ice, per person, per hour. To make a giant ice bucket, try using a plastic children’s kiddie pool, a canoe, or even a wheelbarrow.

Keep your guests cool

The July heat can be brutal, and your guests will have a hard time enjoying themselves if they’re soaking through their clothes. Therefore, be sure to have one, or several, outdoor tents that can provide shade, along with some chairs or benches so guests can eat. You could also consider having sprinklers scattered throughout the party. Or, have a water-gun fight halfway through.
